Designer myths
The science, law and ethics of preimplantation genetic diagnosis
By Kay Chung

The words 'designer babies' - often associated with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) - conjure up images of a brave new world of genetic manipulation. The reality of this procedure is, however, much less alarming. Designer myths attempts to clarify a debate which has been mired in incorrect science and muddied by science fiction fantasy.

Starting from a description of the scientific realities and clinical methods of PGD, Designer myths places the procedure within existing regulatory frameworks, explores the ethical implications and makes cogent recommendations for future regulation.

Briefings in bioethics is a new series of publications that covers a range of ethical issues in biomedicine. The series aims to provide accurate information on the scientific and legal aspects of reproductive and genetic technologies. The briefings also include commentary on the ethical and social issues which arise from each topic.

The launch of the Briefings in bioethics series has been made possible by an educational grant from the UK Department of Health.
