The best Christmas present which PET received was an article in The Lancet discussing the PET Annual Conference - The Warnock Report: 40 years on.
The journalist Jacqui Thornton attended the conference and also followed up by interviewing retired fertility consultant Dr Jane Stewart, Peter Thompson (the Chief Executive of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority) and Emma Cave (Professor of Healthcare Law, at the University of Durham).
Jacqui also interviewed PET Director Sarah Norcross.
Sarah explained PET's connections with Baroness Mary Warnock and the significance of her report to the fields of fertility treatment and embryo research. She told The Lancet
'There are new generations of doctors and health-care professionals, who may not necessarily be aware of the Warnock Report—they wouldn’t have been born in the 1980s. So, the conference was an opportunity for them to get a flavour, and to hopefully inspire them to learn more.'
The article went on to discuss the work that PET's Deputy Director Sandy Starr has been involved with in relation to stem cell-based embryo models which resulted in the publication of a code of practice.
Looking further to the future the piece concludes with a look at in vitro derived gametes and their potential uses to help people overcome fertility issues and have genetically related children.
Please note that the Warnock Report: 40 years on article is behind a paywall.
