This policy document is part of a response submitted by the Progress Educational Trust (PET) to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority's Consultation on its 8th Code of Practice and Revised Consent Forms.

Will new guidance in the Code of Practice help clinics deal with disputes that arise when one partner withdraws their consent to the use or storage of gametes or embryos in treatment?

This guidance appears entirely commonsensical to us. Procedures such as those described in 5.34 of the HFEA's proposed new Code of Practice are a logical means of addressing a situation in which a gamete provider withdraws their consent to the use or storage of gametes or embryos in treatment, and the concluding phrase 'as appropriate' provides useful scope for interpretation in particular circumstances.
