Dr Joanne Delange is Genetics Editor at BioNews and at the charity that publishes it, the Progress Educational Trust (PET). Together with her fellow BioNews editors Hannah Flynn and Jen Willows, she runs the BioNews writing scheme, which provides practical science writing training and experience for PhD students. She also writes for Nutritional Insight, an elite evidence-based nutritional and biomedical writing and consultancy service. She has more than 15 years' experience of online publishing in fast-moving scientific environments, writing articles on current research and out-licensing opportunities.
Joanne's work has assisted in forming collaborative partnerships between research and industry worldwide, ascertaining the commercial applications of research and the relevance of research to disease and to drug discovery. She originally studied Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the University of Southampton, where she undertook laboratory research into the role of growth factors and cytokines in tumour biology, studying the role of PTHrP and EGF in breast cancer cell lines. There, she went on to obtain a PhD in Biochemistry, researching retroviral proteases and in particular the proteases from the Hepatitis C and HIV-1 viruses.
