BioNews Science Editor – part-time, two days per week (Monday and Friday)

Role: Two days per week (must be Monday and Friday)
Location: Option to work in central London office and/or from home
Salary: £10,000-£13,000 (depending on experience and qualifications) for two days per week
BioNews is a free web- and email-based digest of news and opinion in assisted conception, human genetics/genomics, and embryo/stem cell research.
News articles are commissioned in-house on a Friday. These articles, as well as commissioned comment pieces and reviews, are edited and collated by the editorial team on or before Monday and are published on the PET website. A collection of the week's articles – as well as recommended readings, event listings and job advertisements – is published in newsletter form on Monday afternoons, and sent to BioNews subscribers.
We are looking for a Science Editor who is well-organised, self-motivated and has excellent written and oral communications skills. The successful candidate will work as part of a small team in our London office or from home. A degree in a subject related to biological science, and experience of researching, writing and editing articles for publication, are highly desirable for this job.
The main responsibilities of this position include:
- Upholding standards of clarity and scientific accuracy in all BioNews articles.
- Researching, writing and editing articles on assisted conception, human genetics/genomics, embryo/stem cell research and related areas of science and policy for BioNews and other publications.
- Liaising with the team of BioNews volunteer writers and sending out links to news stories and scientific papers, each week, with guidance if necessary.
- Managing the news writing scheme for trainee writers on BioNews (including selecting applicants, teaching the course, and providing both written and oral feedback).
- Liaising with the team of BioNews volunteer writers and providing feedback on their writing
- Editing and proofreading articles submitted by BioNews volunteer writers, and publishing them on the PET website using our content management system.
- Sending out the weekly BioNews email newsletter using our CRM software.
Hours: 9.30am-5.30pm, two days per week (Monday and Friday)
