An American gay couple have commissioned a British woman to act as a surrogate for them. Janie Davis, a writer, will be artificially inseminated with the sperm of one of the men, 38-year old Kevin. The child will be raised by Kevin, a publishing executive, and his partner Rob, a 39-year-old psychiatrist, in New York.
Miss Davis is 26 and already has three children of her own, and her boyfriend, whom she plans to marry this summer, is said to be happy about the surrogacy arrangement. No money is to change hands over the pregnancy. Instead, Miss Davies insists that this is a 'magnanimous gesture', and that she is 'not in the business of buying and selling babies'. She says she is happy to undertake the pregnancy out of 'friendship and mutual respect'. She also says she has already donated her own eggs anonymously.
The two men have already fathered babies for lesbian couples, but have decided that they now want a child of their own. A mutual friend introduced the couple to Miss Davis last year. They say that they have been desperate to find a suitable surrogate after seeing some women in America offering to have babies for people over the internet, but only at a price of £30,000. The men both intend to give up their jobs and move to a country house when the child is born.
Meanwhile, it has come to light that Winston Churchill's wife, Clementine, offered to give the couple's fourth child to Lady Jean Hamilton, a close family friend unable to conceive. The information has been found in private diaries that have remained hidden for 80 years.
