Modern human DNA contains traces from two previously unidentified ancient human lineages, according to new evidence.
The study, published in Science, used a new computational method to analyse the genomes of more than 500 people. The method identifies unusually ancient sections of DNA without requiring a genome from the extinct population itself.
The identity of both ancestral populations remains unknown.
The findings provide further evidence of repeated interbreeding between different human populations during human evolution, even when the populations involved have left no sequenced genomes behind.
