After years of trying to conceive through IVF, Liz Kendall, MP for Leicester West, became the first MP in the UK to have a child through surrogacy.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, Kendall explained: 'It's the hope that kills you... Years of hope that this pregnancy, that round of IVF, would result in a longed-for child, only for it to end in the heartbreak of a miscarriage.'
With infertility affecting approximately one in seven couples, a growing number of parents are turning to surrogacy, which was made legal in the UK in 1985.
At aged 50, Kendall welcomed her son: 'I got to the stage, partly because it had never been a massive part of my life plan and then I got to a certain age and I thought it would never happen…'
