Births in France have dropped to their lowest level since the end of the Second World War according to a measurement of total fertility rate from the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies.
In metropolitan areas, the rate of 1.59 children per woman is the lowest level for more than a century.
However, compared to the EU average of 1.4 children per woman, France's fertility rate is the highest on the continent.
