A year-long case disputing the custody of a single frozen IVF embryo, following a divorce, is due to be heard in the Michigan Supreme Court in April 2025.
The dispute has arisen because the ex-wife wants to use the embryo to conceive another child, but the ex-husband doesn't want more children.
'It's immensely important for the Michigan Supreme Court to establish precedent in our state protecting people's rights to make decisions about IVF and fertility, as well as the constitutional rights to parent and not parent,' said Bonsitu Kitaba-Gaviglio, the deputy legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan.
