Relocating from South London to Tonbridge, about an hour train ride away, resulted in a couple losing access to NHS-funded IVF treatment. Laura and her husband have now spent over £35,000 in private care.
While fertility treatment is available on the NHS to women under 42 in South London, the Kent Integrated Care Board lowered its upper age limit to 38 in April this year. The board then reinstated the eligible age to 40 shortly after, but this decision is subject to change pending the results of a consultation.
Laura, who is now 40, shared how her experience left her increasingly distressed, frustrated and dejected.
'If the postcode lottery problem had already been sorted out, I would have been entitled to free NHS funding right now,' she said.
