Donna Shalala, the US Secretary of Health and Human Services, will be advised on genetic testing issues by members of the new Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing. The 13 members, selected from almost 200 nominees, were announced recently. The committee will be chaired by Edward McCabe, chairman of the department of paediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles and an authority on medical and biochemical genetics. Meeting for the first time on 30 June, the committee will advise Shalala on all aspects of the development and use of genetic tests, including the medical, ethical, legal and social issues they raise.
