The Government has announced that nurses across England will be trained in genomics to help patients in local communities get faster diagnoses and access life-saving treatment closer to home.
This new genomics population health service forms part of the Government's Fit for the Future: Ten-Year Health Plan for England, which outlines a vision for the future of the NHS, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and cutting-edge innovation (see BioNews 1297).
'Nurses are key to the country's research workforce,' said Professor Lucy Chappell, chief scientific adviser at the Department of Health and Social Care and chief executive officer of the National Institute for Health and Care Research. 'Through the Ten Year Health Plan, we have committed to go further, supporting nurses from all specialisms and in all settings to become research active, utilising their expertise to improve patient outcomes through research'.
