The Pope has explained his views on surrogacy further on Spanish television, after calling for a ban in January (see BioNews 1222).
Speaking to the CBS programme 60 Minutes he said: 'In regard to surrogate motherhood, in the strictest sense of the term, no, it is not authorised.'
'Sometimes surrogacy has become a business, and that is very bad. It is very bad.'
He conceded that surrogacy might be a woman's only hope at motherhood, for example among cancer survivors, and said: 'The other hope is adoption.'
'I would say that in each case the situation should be carefully and clearly considered, consulting medically and then morally as well.'
