The winner of this year's Aventis Prize for Science Books - formerly the Rhone-Poulenc Prize - is to be announced at the Science Museum, London on 23 May. The short list of six books includes 'Genome' by Matt Ridley: a guide to the Human Genome Project in 23 chapters (one for each pair of human chromosomes).
Other life sciences contenders are 'Time, Love and Memory', an account of genes and human behaviour by Jonathan Weiner, and 'Children of Prometheus' by Christopher Wills.
Professor Lewis Wolpert, eminent biologist and member of the judging panel, says that 'our only criterion for choosing is this: would we recommend the book to a friend simply because of how interesting we found it'. The winner will receive prize money of £10,000.
