A man treated for acute myeloid leukaemia has met the stem cell donor who provided the cells used in his transplant.
Stephen Cutts was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2023 and received a stem cell transplant after seven rounds of chemotherapy. His donor, Kevin McNicholl, had joined the Anthony Nolan stem cell register at age 17.
The pair initially communicated anonymously before speaking by phone. McNicholl later surprised Cutts by attending a wedding anniversary celebration organised by Cutts' wife.
'You never know if your name will come up and, if it does, you have the chance to save someone's life,' McNicholl said.
People can join the stem cell charity Anthony Nolan's stem cell register, the blood cancer charity DKMS UK's register or the NHS' stem cell donor registry.
