Men with infertility who smoke can improve their sperm quality by quitting, according to a new study.
The study looked at male patients at a fertility clinic in Turkey who smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day. All were advised to stop smoking, and the semen parameters of those who agreed to do so were compared to the patients who continued to smoke.
Patients provided sperm samples while still smokers, and then again three months after quitting, and these were compared to the samples provided by men who had not quit smoking. Those who stopped saw significantly improved sperm concentration and semen volume, but observed improvements in sperm motility and morphology were not statistically significant.
The full study is published in the International Journal of Impotence Research.
