A petition to change the UK's surrogacy law will be debated by Parliament on 7 September.
Adam Frisby and Jamie Corbett are parents to a baby girl born though surrogacy in the USA. Even though they were recognised as her parents from birth in the jurisdiction where she was born, they still needed to apply for a parental order in the UK (see BioNews 1337).
Under UK law, the birth mother (and in some circumstances her husband or civil partner) is always regarded as a child's legal parent, and a parental order is necessary to transfer legal parenthood to the intended parent(s).
The couple launched a petition in April 2026 which received more than the 100,000 signatures required to be considered for a debate in Parliament.
