Helen Beasley, the British woman who was left with twins after an American couple backed out of a surrogacy arrangement, is to receive over £4000 compensation. Under the original surrogacy contract, Ms Beasley was to be paid £14,000, but the couple, Charles Wheeler and Martha Berman, have agreed to cover all Ms Beasley's medical costs pending the result of the action she has brought against them.
Ms Beasley is suing the couple for breach of contract and fraud. They changed their mind about the surrogacy deal after discovering Ms Beasley was carrying twins, and after she refused to terminate one of the fetuses. Ms Beasley had initially agreed to abort any additional fetuses, but claimed that this agreement only went up to the twelfth week of her pregnancy and the couple tried to make her abort one of the twins after this time.
