Women's groups protested outside the Taiwan parliament last week as lawmakers debated changes to the Assisted Reproduction Act that could lead to the legalisation of surrogacy.
Sixteen amendments, five of which relate to surrogacy, were being discussed by lawmakers at the Legislative Yuan's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee. In response to protests, the amendments relating to broadening access to artificial insemination for single women and same-sex couples were to be discussed separately.
The protestors are calling for any change to the law to be accompanied by a thorough impact assessment covering ethnicity, gender and economic aspects.
