UK's Wellcome Trust has increased spending on research grants by 70 per cent this year. This brings the total spending to more than £400m compared to £235m last year. Genetics and neuroscience benefited most from this increase with the £17.2m spent in 1998 growing to £45m this year. The Trust expects to devote about half of their research expenditure over the next five years to genetics-related research. On a percentage basis, public understanding of science also did well with grants tripling to £3.5m.
