Following revelations about Dr Dennis Lutz a few weeks ago (see BioNews 1350), another US fertility doctor is being sued for using his own sperm in patient treatments.
Dr Frederick Dettmann, who practised medicine in the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin, is the subject of legal proceedings from former patient Mary Ellen Lukezich and her adult son, Joseph Laedtke Heider.
Lukezich underwent donor insemination with Dr Dettmann in 1982. She was told that the donor was an anonymous 'healthy young medical student'. However, in 2024, Laedtke Heider took an Ancestry DNA test, which identified multiple half-siblings and a direct link to a member of Dr Dettmann's family.
Dr Dettmann is now 91 years old. His lawyers said he 'has no independent recollection of the individuals making these allegations and is unaware of any evidence supporting the claims being asserted.'
