A strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that emerged 20 years ago in New Zealand is now common all over the world.
Researchers from the New Zealand Institute for Public Health and Forensic Science used whole genome sequencing to trace the MRSA strain back to its non-resistant ancestor, and by doing so, have shown how patterns of antibiotic use affected the development of resistance in the microbial genome.
