A Canadian man has filed a human rights complaint against his health insurance provider, which refused to pay for IVF drugs for surrogacy.
Greg Mountenay and his husband Sean O'Meara are expecting their first child via surrogate. Mountenay's medical insurance plan provides cover for fertility drugs up to CA$18,000, but because the surrogate is not his partner she does not meet eligibility criteria.
Mountenay claims that this policy discriminates against gay men because a couple where neither party has a uterus could never benefit from the policy.
