Mary Lorenzo from Las Vegas and her partner were unable to become pregnant and so decided to pursue surrogacy, resulting in the birth of a son, whom they were raising together.
However, after their relationship broke down, she was separated from the child, and a Nevada court ruled she was ineligible to seek custody or visitation because she had not been married to the father and they had used an egg donor, meaning that she was not genetically related to the child.
The Nevada High Court has now overturned that ruling, and published its judgment for lower courts to follow.
