As children conceived via donor sperm and eggs from 2005 start to reach the age of 18 this year, they will be the first in the UK to be able to access information about their donors.
Due to the law change in 2005 that replaced anonymous donation with identity release donation these soon-to-be-adults will be able to request information from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority Donor Conceived Register including their donor's name, birthdate, and last known postal address.
Dr Zeynep Gurtin a lecturer in women's health at University College London wrote in the Guardian about the change, including interviews with parents of donor-conceived children, campaigners and researchers.
