A new law in Denmark will remove the recipient requirement for egg donation, meaning that it no longer has to be performed with a designated recipient in mind at the time of harvest.
This aims to make egg donation easier and to reduce waiting times and waste. Surplus eggs from the donation may now be frozen and given to multiple involuntarily childless recipients.
'With this agreement, we're giving women who want to help others have children the opportunity to donate eggs without needing a pre-matched recipient,' said Interior and Health Minister Sophie Løhde.
She denied that this would lead to the establishment of an 'egg bank'. This law is expected to come into force on 1 January 2026.
