Egg freezing was discussed on the Radio 4 Today programme on 9 January.
The segment included an interview with Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) chief executive Peter Thompson and a clip from Catherine Hendy, a patient who has been through a cycle of egg freezing, in which she described her experience.
Discussion included costs and transparency around these, as well as chances of a successful pregnancy using frozen eggs.
Thompson said: 'Clinics are responsible to make sure women understand all aspects of the procedure. Not just the medical procedure itself but all issues around consent, storage, costs.'
Presenter Mishal Hussein asked Thompson if the HFEA had enough powers of intervention and regulation, and whether the law needs to be updated to reflect the growth of the sector.
'The industry is radically different 30 years on and there's a whole range of issues - not just regulatory rules but around consent and confidentiality and scientific progress - where we think the [Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990] is now showing its age,' he said. 'We plan to go out to consult on [reforming the Act], probably next month. Clearly, a decision to change the Act is very much for the government and ultimately parliament'.
The segment starts at 1:50:38.
