PET director Sarah Norcross travelled to Leiden in the Netherlands for a two-day event on in vitro derived gametes (IVGs).
This IVG Ethics and Policy Symposium was part of the the Future of Human Reproduction project. Professor Stephen Wilkinson from Lancaster University leads this project and the team includes Dr Nicola Williams, Dr Andrew Darby, Dr Laura O'Donovan, Dr Zoe Bolton. Professor Sara Forvargue at the University of Sheffield is also a team member.
Bioethicists, philosophers and policymakers travelled from Greece, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Germany, France, Portugal, Belgium, Sweden and Norway to join the deliberations. It was no surprise that among the ethical issues raised were safety, funding and equity in access.
Sarah earned her place in Leiden by chairing a session which updated the audience on the science of IVGs. The panel joined the meeting virtually from the USA and included Professor Amander Clark, Matt Krisiloff and Shoukhrat Mitalipov.
The Future of Human Reproduction project (funded by Wellcome) aims to produce a policy briefing on the law and ethics of IVG. PET looks forward to reading it.
