India Knight's column in The Sunday Times took its subject from PET's annual conference 'Making Fertility Treatment Fair: Equality in Access, Equality in Outcome?'.
In 'Why are we scared to say fertility's a ticking clock?', Knight quotes Professor Dame Leslie Regan's presentation at PET's conference (see BioNews 1171) about engaging with young people on the topic of their fertility:
'We need TikTok videos, don't we, and all of those sorts of things: ‘Remember that your ovaries get worn out or they get tired or they get too old,' ... I think it should be all of us in society making sure that we give adolescents the tools that they need to make the best decisions for themselves later in life, and I include the boys in that as well as the girls.'
Knight discusses the very mature ages at which celebrity women can be seen having children, as well as the taboo around asking younger people if/when they plan to start a family. She tries to reconcile this with the biological reality that for those who want children, it is often easier the younger you are.
