IVF (in vitro fertilisation) doctors at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth have begun a clinical trial investigating the effects of reflexology on women's fertility. They will compare the effectiveness of the popular alternative therapy with that of the fertility drug clomiphene, reported the Independent on Sunday newspaper. Dr Jonathon Lord, clinical lecturer in reproductive medicine, said the trial would focus on how many women ovulate after treatment, not on the number of pregnancies.
A total of 150 women have volunteered for the trial, which came about after the clinic was approached by reflexologist Jane Holt. She claims that 13 of 23 women with fertility problems have become pregnant after being treated by her over the past year. Reflexology, which involves manipulation of pressure points on the hands and feet, will be offered instead of clomiphene to half the women taking part in the trial.
