The Finnish Parliament has approved a long-debated law on Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) reimbursements for fertility treatments. The law will come into effect in May 2025.
Private fertility treatments will now be eligible for compensation only if infertility has a medical cause, which means most unmarried women and same-sex female couples will be excluded from coverage if their infertility is not due to illness. Critics of the bill from several parties have argued that the law should have considered different types of families.
