A fetus has a functional immune system and can combat infections in its developing nervous system long before birth, according to a paper published in Cell.
Researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School studied the response of fetal immune cells in a preclinical model using Zika virus strains. They observed that these cells take on a protective role during an infection and are important in defending against pathogens.
