Until 2020, Canada banned all men who have sex with men from becoming sperm donors. Since then the rules have changed, but a questionnaire still resulted in indirect discrimination against this group.
A man named Aziz challenged the rules through Canada's courts. Before coming out as gay, he had donated to a sperm bank, and remains in touch with a lesbian couple and their daughter who was conceived using his sperm.
Health Canada has said it now plans to drop questions that discriminate against men who have sex with men.
'For queer people it’s harder to have kids, and so I think more gay men would be inclined to contribute to society in this way,' Aziz said.
