A gene for dyslexia has been mapped by an international team of researchers based in Norway, Belgium and the US. Reporting in the Journal of Medical Genetics, the researchers emphasise that the discovery indicates that dyslexia manifests differently among those who inherit the gene for it. The new gene - DYX3 - is located on chromosome 2. The researchers hope to be able to clone the genetic sequence to gain insights into the processes involved in reading and spelling, for which it is thought several genes may be responsible.
