Scientists from the the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge, have created the first detailed genetic map of cancer in domestic cats, analysing tumour DNA from almost 500 pet cats and examining around 1000 genes linked to 13 types of feline cancer.
The study, published in Science, found many of the genes driving cat cancers are also involved in human cancers, suggesting shared biological processes that allow tumours to grow and spread.
