A mother who gave birth to another woman's child after a mix-up at a New York fertility clinic has decided to hand the baby back to its biological parents. Donna Fasano gave birth three months ago to twin boys - one white and one black - after her fertility clinic accidentally transferred another IVF couple's embryos, as well as her own, during treatment.
Mrs Fasano and Mrs Perry-Rogers had attended the same clinic on the same day last April to have their respective embryos transferred to their wombs. A month later Mrs Fasano was found to be pregnant while Mrs Perry-Rogers was not. After the clinic became aware of the error, tests carried out during the pregnancy showed that she was carrying someone else's child. However, until last week, the Fasanos had refused to give up the baby that neighbours say they dote on. Mr and Mrs Fasano were unaware of the identity of their black son's biological parents until they were named in a lawsuit lodged against the clinic by the Perry-Rogers last month.
While threats of a lawsuit from the boy's genetic parents, Mr and Mrs Perry-Rogers, had failed, thoughts of Mrs Perry-Rogers' years of childlessness managed to change Mrs Fasano's mind on the custody issue. Both couples have launched multi-million dollar lawsuits against the New York fertility clinic.
