A AUS$2000 payment for out-of-pocket costs relating to IVF treatments was made available to all patients in New South Wales, Australia in January 2023.
Now, it is being means-tested so that it is only available to families making less than AUS$116,000 a year.
Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales said his government had doubled the budget available for the scheme compared to the previous government, but more people were using it than had been expected.
'The previous government established the program in January 2023, right before the election campaign, the real tragedy is they didn't put any money into it,' Minns said, 9News reported. 'We looked at the scheme, we thought it was genuinely worthwhile... but the number of people that applied for the scheme was far beyond what the government could afford.'
