A new centralised database of genes linked to inherited cancer risk is in development, NHS England announces.
As part of a national programme, the National Inherited Cancer Predisposition Register will contain approximately 120 genes linked to inherited cancer risk, representing the first attempt to bring together this information in a single database. Patients and their families will be able to compare their genetic data with the register, enabling the NHS to identify people who are predisposed and to offer regular screenings and preventative treatment.
'We are entering a new era of early cancer detection with pioneering research and testing helping us to discover more about how genes influence our chances of developing cancer – and this register could help ensure thousands more people can be offered screening, tests and the latest treatments,' said Professor Peter Johnson, national clinical cancer director at NHS England.
The database is expected to improve early cancer detection through routine check-ups and screenings, increasing the likelihood of successful treatment. It will also support more personalised information and care, as cancers linked to certain genes may respond better to specific treatments, which can then be recommended.
People previously identified as at risk by the NHS will be added to the centralised database. Those who undergo testing will receive a diagnosis and tailored information on reducing their risk before being added to the register.
Wes Streeting, the UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said that the new register 'will be life-changing and life-saving, allowing the NHS to develop individual care, fast-track screening and tailored information to enable more cancers to be caught earlier.'
The database forms part of the NHS Ten-Year Health Plan for England (see BioNews 1297, 1300a and 1300b), which also includes improving cancer treatment and prevention. It follows the successful launch of the Lynch syndrome database, which provides routine screening for people with a diagnosis of Lynch syndrome as a preventive measure against bowel, endometrial and ovarian cancers associated with the condition. Since the launch of the Lynch syndrome database, over 12,000 people have received further bowel screening, which is estimated to prevent bowel cancer in 40-60 percent of cases.
Professor Johnson said that, while awareness of inherited risk is 'very daunting', it also 'enables you to take the necessary measures and to be aware of any risk of the cancer developing'.
The process is currently underway, and the central register is expected to begin contacting people in the coming months.
