The NHS in England has launched a new National Inherited Cancer Predisposition Register, designed to help patients and their families identify whether they carry genes linked to an increased risk of cancer.
The database will initially cover 120 genes known to influence cancer susceptibility.
People identified as having an inherited risk will be offered routine screening and preventative care for certain cancers, including breast and prostate cancer. Genetic information will also be used to guide personalised treatment where appropriate.
NHS England said the initiative is part of a ten-year plan to improve cancer prevention and treatment.
