Genomic Laboratory Hubs set up in 2021 to underpin the NHS Genomic Medicine Service have become overwhelmed with demand, according to an investigation by the Mail on Sunday.
Cancer patients were waiting up to six weeks for genetic testing of tumours which could determine the best treatment options, cancer charities reported.
Professor John Gosney, professor of thoracic pathology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital who was involved in setting up the genetic hubs, told Mail on Sunday: 'The hubs can’t be trusted to return results in time [...] Targeted drugs are being discovered all the time and the need for genetic testing is only going to increase, so this needs sorting out.'
