Professor Katalin Karikó and Professor Drew Weissman have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that contributed to the development of mRNA vaccines.
They discovered making changes to the nucleoside bases in the mRNA molecule used in a vaccine could help reduce inflammatory response while increasing production of the vaccine protein after injection, the Guardian reported.
