According to nbc news, a European man has been in remission from HIV infection for nearly two years after receiving a stem cell transplant to treat blood cancer.
Previously, five other people have been 'cured' of HIV after a stem cell transplant for cancer treatment (see BioNews 1133 and 1131). However, in this latest case, the patient received stem cells from a donor who does not have a rare mutation that makes it much harder for HIV to infect enter cells.
