MIT Technology Review reports that embryos that could be used for valuable research are being wasted, as heard at the the 2024 PET (Progress Educational Trust) Annual Conference – '40 Years after the Warnock Report: What Is the Embryo's Special Status?' said (see BioNews 1268).
Professor Geraldine Hartshorne, scientific director of the Coventry Centre for Reproductive Medicine, who spoke at the conference told delegates the decline could be attributed to IVF clinics not having links to academic research centres and the onerous levels of bureaucracy required – sometimes taking up to a year – before a donation can be approved.
