Proposed regulation could mean that single woman, and those with female partners could be prevented from accessing donor sperm to have children.
Currently, there is no regulation around the use of anonymous donor sperm in Japan, making it a legal grey area. A proposed law would regulate the use of donor sperm, but only for married couples. Japan does not recognise same-sex marriages.
Currently, treating single women and those in same-sex partnerships with donor sperm goes against guidelines produced by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, but is not illegal.
