Researchers involved in the African Centre for Translational Genomics (ACTG) aim to sequence the genomes of 100,000 people in Nigeria.
African people are the most genetically-diverse population in the world. But in 2019, only 3 percent of genomic studies included African populations. In 2021, that number actually dropped to 1.1 percent.
Sequencing 100,000 Nigerians will give researchers a better picture of the genomic diversity in Africa compared to other sequencing efforts.
