The US Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute in California has tripled its capacity to sequence the human genome by leasing 24 MegaBACE DNA sequencers. The Joint Genome Institute, which is targeting human chromosomes 5,16 and 19, now has the capacity to sequence 14 million raw bases each day. Federal officials revealed their plan to acquire more sequencers to further increase the decoding effort by a factor of two or more. There are currently more than 200 researchers sequencing DNA 24 hours a day at the institute, with their efforts published each day on a website.
