A Swedish court has found surgeon Paolo Macchiarini guilty of causing bodily harm during experimental stem cell windpipe transplants. He has received a suspended sentence which will put him on probation for the next two years, despite prosecutors initially recommending he serve five years in jail. He was cleared of assault because no intent to harm had been proven.
Three patients he had treated with plastic tracheas with stem cells on them had died following the experimental procedure, the BBC reported.
