The office from which we at the Progress Educational Trust (PET) publish BioNews does not have central heating. It's therefore unsurprising, perhaps, that conversation in the office this icy morning moved quickly from bioethics and the contents of today's edition of BioNews to thermal long johns and how best to keep warm.

Most have us have decided to keep our hats on - our thinking caps, as I like to call them - while we work. But that doesn't prevent us from passing the metaphorical hat round for the BioNews Christmas Appeal.

You can donate by texting 'PROG23 £10' (or any other amount) to 70070, or by donating via PayPal on our website. Better still, you can support us by becoming a Friend of PET and giving a regular donation.

Thanks to those of you who responded generously to the fundraising email we sent last week - your donations meant that we doubled the amount raised so far. But for those of you who haven't, there is still time to donate. Please donate now, if you would like to see BioNews continue to be published throughout 2013.

(And for our Antipodean readers currently enduring scorching temperatures - we don't have any air con either!)
