Researchers at the University of Bristol have used miniature brain organoids to process electrical signals representing Braille letters, achieving an 83 percent classification accuracy when three organoids were combined.
The study, published in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, explored whether organoids could receive and relay information from an artificial tactile sensor as a step towards biohybrid computing systems.
The team emphasised that the experiments demonstrated the processing and decoding of tactile information, rather than learning by the organoids.
Further research will investigate more complex tactile stimuli, including textures and edges, and whether organoids can adapt through feedback.
